Overcoming complex installation challenges to deliver tailored Air Conditioning in a converted Norfolk barn

KS Cooling was appointed to design and install a three-room Air Conditioning solution within a beautifully converted Norfolk barn.

With conventional external pipework routes unavailable, the project required careful planning and creative engineering to deliver effective heating and cooling while respecting the property’s distinctive character and interior finishes.

Introducing modern Air Conditioning into a converted barn with challenging installation constraints

Tailored comfort across three living spaces

The homeowners wanted effective, individually controlled heating and cooling for both upstairs bedrooms and the ground-floor kitchen. Each space required a carefully considered solution that would provide comfortable conditions throughout the year while accommodating the property’s existing layout and distinctive architectural features.

Overcoming the property’s structural limitations

The barn’s conversion presented significant installation challenges, with no practical access to either gable end for conventional external pipework routes. The homeowners needed a solution that could overcome these restrictions without extensive alterations to the building or unnecessary disruption to its existing finishes.

Preserving the character of the converted barn

Maintaining the appearance of the home’s carefully finished interiors was a central consideration. Any visible pipework or containment needed to be kept as discreet as possible, with equipment positioning and service routes thoughtfully agreed in advance to achieve the best balance between practicality and aesthetics.

Overcoming installation challenges through meticulous planning and considered engineering

KS Cooling developed a carefully planned multi-split Air Conditioning solution, overcoming the property’s restricted access and unconventional service routes.

From navigating confined loft spaces to discreetly integrating internal containment, every aspect of the installation was designed to deliver reliable performance while respecting the character of the converted barn.

An 8kW Midea outdoor Condenser was specified to serve three individually controlled indoor units, providing heating and cooling to both upstairs bedrooms and the ground-floor kitchen. The multi-split arrangement allowed all three areas to be served from a single outdoor unit, avoiding the need for multiple external Condensers.

With approximately 55 metres of refrigerant pipework required across the project, careful route planning was essential. To minimise visible internal containment, pipework and associated cabling were strategically grouped within a single shared trunking route wherever practicable, incorporating challenging sections through restricted loft spaces and connecting to the external Condenser.

Particular attention was given to the kitchen, where internal containment was deliberately positioned at low level to remain largely concealed behind existing cabinetry. Visible sections were neatly installed and carefully aligned with the room’s layout, achieving a considered finish without unnecessary alterations to the property.

Indoor unit locations, pipework routes and containment details were carefully considered and agreed with the homeowner before installation. This collaborative approach ensured that technical requirements could be accommodated while preserving the property’s character, demonstrating how thoughtful design can overcome even the most challenging installation constraints.
